Buying Hardware

Looking to buy some new hardware? A new laptop maybe (though there's nothing wrong with your current one is there), perhaps a desktop? Maybe a phone? Why not shop second-hand?

Used, last-generation hardware will still work very well, it'll save you considerable amounts of money, and save a device going to e-waste.

Most of the time, generational differences yield a relatively minor improvement compared to the previous generation. In fact, the RTX 5090 actually performs worse than the RTX 4090 for rasterised rendering.

But before even that, why are you looking for new hardware? Is your laptop broken? Why not save even more money and repair it yourself!

Loads of tutorials can be found on YouTube and likewise platforms to replace memory, storage drives, trackpads, keyboards, screens, cameras, speakers, microphones, the list goes on! The only thing limiting you is the evil glue monster. >:(

For some reason manufacturers thought that instead of easily repairable, cleanable, and thermally-adequate machines we wanted thin and light. If you're carrying around a computer all day, you should feel like so!

Why not have a look to see what can be repaired or upgraded with your current machine? If you don't know the model, look for stickers on the device, it should have something somewhere. Otherwise, try reverse image searching or AI recognition.

And if you do end up buying a new device, make an informed decision rather than picking the first thing off the shelf. And look for repairability!
